CBS NEWS — A lot of kids are stuck at home with many schools closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Between school work and entertainment, much of their time is in front of screens. Marissa DiBartolo, editor-in-chief at The Toy Insider, highlights some toys that can help them unplug. Parents looking to keep kids occupied while stimulating their minds can turn to hands-on toys that incorporate science and technology. "Activity toys are great for making sure kids are busy and engaged for long periods of time. We don't want to hear 'I'm bored' especially when parents are trying to get work done from home," according DiBartolo. DiBartolo says, "It's really important to have some things on hand that can give kids a real tactile, hands-on learning experience." GREENSBORO, N.C. — As families spend time together, many look for fun things to do at home. The search has boosted the demand for children's toys and board games and one local toy store has started to do things differently. "It has been very successful, we've been booming online," said Marc Holcomb of Toys and Co. at the Friendly Center in Greensboro.
Since the spread of coronavirus has continued in North Carolina and throughout the country, schools have closed and stay-at-home orders have restricted movement. Many children have been unable to also go on playdates, go to the playground or parks and parents can't take them to the toy stores. The coronavirus pandemic has also caused shipping delays for folks shopping online for children's toys. So parents have now turned to local toy stores. "People are really appreciative that they still have access to the toys that they need particularly in a tim...
BB-8, the spherical orange and white robot that makes whirring noises as cute as kitten purrs doesn't exactly seem cut out for use in a police force or military. It's a great toy, but not designed for detonating bombs, sniffing drugs, or whatever else those agencies use robots for. But Sphero, an educational STEM toy company that once made Disney's Star Wars BB-8 and R2D2 robot toys, has started a spin-off company called Company Six (CO6) to make bots for law enforcement. According to a press release first obtained by The Verge, Sphero said it's using the experience it gained making toys to create robotic products for "police, fire, EMT, military, and others with dangerous jobs." That could include mini surveillance robots for reconnaissance missions and scoping out dangerous territory, like in a fire, a hostage situation, a meth lab, or a swamp for a dead body. (I know, I watch way too many crime shows.) Law enforcement and the military have been us...
