Gambar
COLLEGE STATION, TX — Bridget Mais, the owner of Learning Express Toys in College Station has turned to virtual storytelling to keep kids entertained through this pandemic. She's used to kids running through the isles at her educational toy store, now that her doors are closed things have gone silent. "This silence is really deafening and the heart and soul of my store are the kids that come by," Mais said. Mais goes live on Facebook to read a few times a week and absolutely loves it. "As long as I can stay connected to the kiddos and their families that's all that matters at this point," Mais said. She even brought special guest, College Station Mayor Kyle Mooney, to join in on storytime. "It keeps our young people thinking in positive ways and not just dreading of not having anything to do." Mayor Mooney said. As we get through some of the toughest times Mayor Mooney hopes we remember the positive things after all this is over. "They [commun...

Hillsboro toy store owner hits on a winning solution to fight coronavirus keep her store alive and help children

Gambar
Business was booming for Michelle Smith's three Piccolo Mondo Toys stores in Hillsboro and Beaverton – well, it was until the coronavirus intervened. Smith's business concept is for the experience at her stores to be hands-on and interactive. But that kind of shopping isn't possible now because of social distancing. She has kept the lights on by selling on the web and offering curbside pickup, but that isn't playing to Piccolo Mondo's strengths. At her downtown Hillsboro store recently, "we had a really slow day," Smith says. "Our revenue literally was four dollars and 99 cents." That clearly isn't sustainable. At about the same time, Oregon schools closed because of the pandemic. Smith was talking to a fellow toy store owner in Buffalo, New York, who had set up a plan to solicit donations from the public to be used to make up activity bags that could be donated to needy children who couldn't be at school. Smith liked the idea and hit up ...

Piccolo Mondo Toys donates 170 activity bags to Hillsboro families in need

Gambar
HILLSBORO, Ore. — Being stuck at home has many families breaking out the board games, puzzles, and activities more than ever. However, that might not be an option for families who are struggling to put food on the table in these uncertain times. That's why a local toy store is stepping up, to add a little joy and a little play when families need it the most. "Toy stores; we bring hope and joy to children. That's really what we do," said Michelle Smith, owner of Piccolo Mondo Toys. Step into a toy store and no matter how old you are, you're snapped back to that age of wonder and imagination. With teddy bears, trains, puzzles and dolls filling the shelves, it's hard not to transport to a world of endless possibilities for fun. That's what Michelle Smith wants for her customers at Piccolo Mondo Toys. However, that in-person wonderment has been put on hold because of the coronavirus. She had to close ...

The MagnetCubes toy brings the adrenaline of Hot Wheels to the creativity of LEGO

Gambar
MagnetCube vividly reminds me of one of the greatest online games of our time. No, not Minecraft. Try a little older. Remember Rollercoaster Tycoon? And how if you didn't have enough money to buy preset Rollercoaster designs, you had to build your own? Between you and me, I'd try to make the most outrageous coasters even if I DID have the money. Building a track together piece by piece, aligning the last piece to the end of the station to complete the track, and just watching as the virtual park-visitors screamed in sheer delight through the coaster ride. There's something about that joy of creation that the MagnetCubes captures. Part creation, part elaborate gravity trick, MagnetCubes lets you build your own ball-bearing racetrack using its modular setup. With an incredibly exhaustive variety of track-shapes that let you build the ball-bearing rollercoaster of your dreams and a transparent framework to hold your creation up, the MagnetCubes is an engaging toy that's i...

Mattel Joins the Bioplastic Toy Brigade

Toys, whether they are in the real or digital world, sure can help us get our minds off the day-to-day reality with which we're now coping. And as is the case with many sectors, the toy industry will have to consider a reset once we emerge from this crisis. To that end, Mattel announced this week it would start manufacturing some of its timeless children's toys out of plastic derived from sugarcane. It's okay to put it in your mouth — these toys are made from sugarcane These toys, which include the brands we remember from our youth (or that of our kids), include Fisher-Price's Rock-a-Stack and Baby's First Blocks. The revamped versions, which Mattel put on pre-sale just in time for Earth Day, follow on the heels of the company's announcement several months ago that it would transition both its toys and packaging to 100 percent recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic by 2030. The toy giant also says it surpassed a 2018 goal of transitioning to 90 per...

Toy manufacturers looking to reduce their carbon footprint

Gambar
NEW YORK — Taking a toy out of the box can make a mess. Hardly eco-friendly, the process can yield more clutter from plastic and cardboard than the actual toy. But there are moves to change that as some toy manufacturers say they're going green with a series of environmentally friendly initiatives: Army soldiers and Kermit the Frog aren't the only toys that are green. "Companies are trying to be more environmentally conscious with their products, whether it's using their packaging that has less plastic or making sure that their packaging is part of the toy … it's really taking over the industry and we're going to see a lot more of it this year," says Maddie Michalik, senior editor for Toy Insider magazine. These initiatives range from using minimal packaging and recycled packing materials to opting for bio-based plastics rather than their petroleum counterpart. Some have even made the formerly discarded box part of the play experience. Mattel...

As 89% of the world's student population are affected by nationwide school closures, according to UNESCO, the US has seen a surge in sales of activity-based categories for entertainment and hands-on learning, says The NPD Group. In the week ending March 21, sales of toys, books and office supplies rose considerably for everything from board games and activity books to coloring and chalk games in the US. That week total toy sales grew by 26%. The fastest-growing category was games and puzzles, which jumped 228% in a single week, driven by family board/action, card and children's games. Building sets also saw a 75% increase in sales and arts and crafts was not far behind with 70% growth due to craft kits and reusable compounds flying off the shelves. Outdoor and sports toys are also having a moment and grew by 20%. The NPD's toy industry advisor Juli Lennett says this is likely due to consumers stocking up for lengthy school closures. To th...
