BB-8, the spherical orange and white robot that makes whirring noises as cute as kitten purrs doesn't exactly seem cut out for use in a police force or military. It's a great toy, but not designed for detonating bombs, sniffing drugs, or whatever else those agencies use robots for. But Sphero, an educational STEM toy company that once made Disney's Star Wars BB-8 and R2D2 robot toys, has started a spin-off company called Company Six (CO6) to make bots for law enforcement. According to a press release first obtained by The Verge, Sphero said it's using the experience it gained making toys to create robotic products for "police, fire, EMT, military, and others with dangerous jobs." That could include mini surveillance robots for reconnaissance missions and scoping out dangerous territory, like in a fire, a hostage situation, a meth lab, or a swamp for a dead body. Music stores, bookstores, office supply stores, art supply stores, and toy stores that sell things like puzzles and games for child enrichment are examples of nonessential businesses eligible to reopen as soon as May 18 if they apply for a waiver from D.C. The  Education and Academic Retail Shops (EARS) program is a pilot offered by the District so it can learn about how to allow more businesses to reopen safely. With D.C. currently scheduled to move into its first phase of reopening on June 8, the pilot will be available for about three weeks, if businesses complete a waiver application through the EARS program website. The stores must be based in the District and independently owned and operated to be eligible. The application requires that businesses provide an operation plan that will vigilant sanitization measures and ensure social distancing or contactless exchange. OAK LAWN, IL — Although the Children's Museum In Oak Lawn is closed and events postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the museum is now offering introduced social distancing curbside pickup of educational toys, puzzles and other items. Items to enrich children's playtime and education are now available for purchase in the museum's online gift shop. "We are glad to be able to offer this service," executive director Adam Woodworth said in a news release.
